Leonard cohen amazon5/29/2023 ![]() And audio excerpts from Cohen’s interviews with former Rolling Stone reporter Larry “Ratso” Sloman also give viewers some clues as to why Geller and Goldfine only dig so deep into the meaning of “Hallelujah” and its surprising combination of religious and sexual images. It’s great to see so much old concert footage from various periods of Cohen’s career. ![]() “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song” glosses over some of the best evidence to support what is, at heart, a basic story: after laboring for years on the lyrics for “Hallelujah,” and then later struggling with his own personal and creative demons, Cohen’s song helped to spark a late-career revival and mini-creative renaissance, too. Cohen’s “Halleluljah” is then presented as a trite symbol of his frustrated creative ambitions, though archival interviews with Cohen do effectively suggest that there’s more to his music-and that song, in particular-than the usual artistic triumph over industrial exploitation narrative. This was decades after the song debuted in 1984 on Various Positions, a (rather good) studio album that was rejected by Columbia Records and barely released in the United States. Geller and Goldfine’s docu-collage of interview and concert footage doesn’t give deep consideration to the conditions that led to “Hallelujah” becoming a late career hit for Cohen. ![]()

The beatles anthology 25/28/2023 ![]() Some of the alternate takes are extremely different and excellent performances on their own merits: the funkier version of "I'm Looking Through You" and the less mellow arrangement of "Norwegian Wood," a wall-of-drugs reverb for "Tomorrow Never Knows," a very Byrds-like approach to "And Your Bird Can Sing" (with giggle-laden vocals), and an acoustic demo of "Fool on the Hill." The earlier, much more acoustic version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" is the most notable gem. Proby (who covered the song shortly afterward). ![]() The Help!-era outtakes "If You've Got Troubles" and "That Means a Lot" are on the light side but very fun, especially the latter, which Paul and the group perform much better than P.J. As with the first volume, this is nearly always interesting but perhaps thinner on revelations than some might expect. But the emphasis is upon alternate takes from early 1965 to early 1968, during which time the group rapidly evolved from post-Merseybeat through folk-rock to psychedelia. As expected, the second installment of the Anthology series reflects the Beatles' increasing use of the studio-as-laboratory during their "middle years." Some live material from 1965 to 1966 appears on the first disc, and the second "reunion" single ("Real Love") leads off the set. ![]() The Risen by Ron Rash5/28/2023 ![]() The Risen centers around Bill and Eugene Matney, teenage brothers living under the dictatorial reign of their grandfather, their North Carolina town’s sole physician. Two years from the end of The Last Argument of Kings, Best Served Cold takes us to the land of Styria – one that is ridden with war, death, revenge and many other unpleasantries. Watkins5/28/2023 ![]() My kids looooved it, and we definitely enjoyed reading through it together, so I do highly recommend, it's just not as good as the first one. Learning early the power of allegory and fiction from writers such as John Bunyan, Dawn Watkins found fantasy the best dress for the story of one boys struggle to become king. However, that's my perspective, as the Mom. There are also a few rather magical details added, and it seems to not fit as much with the rest of the book. ![]() ![]() This one, however, starts out with a couple of characters who you think will be the main story arc, and they'll learn and grow just as their father before them in the previous book did, but then it ends up being a conglomeration of different storylines, and there's not a clear cut picture of what the theme or moral of the story is. He bears the shield of a king and a strange message. Watkins, tells of Innera, a girl of Dider, discovering a wounded soldier in the snowy woods. I felt like with the plot in the other two (especially medallion), you know what's going on, you follow along on the journey really well, and you learn and grow with the characters as you go. Shield, the second book of Christian fantasy fiction by Dawn L. I felt like this one wasn't written quite as well as the other two, simply in terms of plot. ![]() ![]() We loveloveLOVE Medallion, and we really enjoyed Shield, which is the prequel. Bowen and Eby clearly work well together, and if this first book in their Man Hands series is anything to go by, we're in store for a whole lot of romping and romancing in what I expect will be two more books to follow (because the female main character has two best friends, one of whom is married but seems to have marital woes and the other has already been paired up for the second book in a likely enemies-to-lovers story with the male main character's best friend). If I had any worries about whether or not I would like her and Tanya Eby's first offering to fans and readers, they aptly brushed those worries aside with a romantic comedy read that had me snickering and smiling more times than I could have hoped for. With Man Hands, she not only introduces a new series but a new writing partnership. Sarina Bowen is one of my favorite go-to authors, and whether as a solo writer or working as part of writing duo, her stories have, more often than not, resonated with me and left me happily satisfied. ![]() Steve ignorant the rest is propaganda5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Live at Shepherds Bush Empire, in London, backed by guest musicians On 24th and 25th November 2007 he performed Crass's entire The Feeding of the 5000 Rimbaud in 1977.After Crass stopped performing in 1984, he has worked with other groups including Conflict, Schwartzeneggar, Stratford Mercenaries and Current 93 as well as being an occasional solo performer. He is also a sculptor, and has worked as a tarditional Punch and Judy performer using the name Professor Ignorant.
